Racial Identity 


     Race and racism are complex, sensible yet important topics. Nowadays, these are topic some people don’t even want to talk about because they have become very controversial, however is it important that we can identify our race. Although race has no genetic or scientific basis, the concept of race is important and consequential. Society use race to establish and justify systems of power, privilege as well as oppression.

     Ever since I started YDEV I have learned a lot about race. For instance, I took FNED on Spring 2019, we did multiple activities and assignments about race. We even had to go to social justice event in the community. I choose to go to NEARI for “Black History Teach-in” they did a presentation about Martin Luther King and about his “I have a dream” speech. I already knew what it was about however they made me understand it better because people leading the presentation were very professional and maintained the atmosphere engage. On the other hand, when I was growing up I did not pay attention to race, for children and young people that is not important at all. I started learning, more about race when I was in high school. I thought that race was created to classify people from white to color, I did not know how to express  my opinion regarding race, I did not know how I felt about race, but I always thought race was a way to divide white from black people.

    Hi Indira!

    I agree, society often uses race as a negative way to justify systems of power, privilege and oppression. I did not really begin to learn about these systems until I was in college. In my opinion, I believe race and identity should be part of a child's curriculum from the beginning.
