Youth Work ---> Leading

Over time youth have not really been involved in leading positions. I believe society needs more youth leading and actively participating in the community in different roles such as the elections, volunteer programs and so on to ultimately become successful individuals and to avoid them from being involved in violence, drugs and bad influences. When leading comes into play youth feel more valued and their voice can be hear.

Allowing young people become leaders from underestimated communities, elevate and provide them ongoing support along pathway of prosperity, their mindset is crucial to set up young people for success in school and life therefore, they have to be motivated to take initiative to lead. For instance, I remember being a "line leader" in elementary school. It was very exciting, being the first one in line guiding my peers throughout the building. We were encouraged by teachers to actively participate in class, and behave in order to be the line leader of the day/week. As I was growing up, I learned leader must possess multiples values/qualities which was what motivated every child do well in school in order to be able to assist the teacher and also become a line leader. I have great memories of teachers that inspired me to always be a "leader not follower" and all of them led by example, I always saw them as great role models. In the eyes of students, teacher are leaders.

The whole point of leading, consists on motivating and working with youth so they can make a difference in society. In order to have them in the right path of becoming successful individuals we need to be able to work with them, teaching them how important it is to become influential leaders/individual.

  1. I love the picture you chose! I agree that we need more youth leading and leading with. As a young person it means so much for people to hear what we have to say and actually value us and our thoughts. We have so much to say and give and there needs to be more opportunities for youth to lead!

  2. Thanks for your post Indira--I also really like your pic. It's interesting to think about those opportunities for leadership--like line leader, and different kinds of helpers that take place in early childhood. Somehow by middle school, they mostly seem to disappear.
